McCain Frees 15 Hostages from Colombia

with 2 comments

When John McCain left the Hanoi Hilton, he made a promise to those men he had to leave behind–never again. Yesterday, John McCain proved just what those words meant by rescuing 15 foreign prisoners from the Colombian Terrorist group–FARC.

Now, I love to envision McCain storming into the compound like Chuck Norris or Rambo, but I think we can be pretty certain that isn’t how he pulled off the rescue. However, McCain has considerable pull with the Colombians and with FARC itself. The head of his campaign Charlie Black is a major lobbyist for Colombia and one of his top fundraisers Carl Lindler the CEO of Chiquita Brands oversaw a donation of roughly $2,000,000 to FARC.

With that kind of pull on both sides, it makes perfect sense that McCain was able to work out a deal to free the hostages. Don’t take my word for it though. On Fox News yesterday Steve Harrigan said:

Well, you’d have to think as a former prisoner of war himself, Sen. McCain would have an intense interest in this case. It’s been played pretty low profile. A lot of people aren’t even aware of the fate of these three Americans. They were really working for a Defense Department civilian contractor. So there really might be a connection between the high-level visit of the former prisoner of war, John McCain himself, and the release now of three American prisoners here in southern Colombia.

You have to love John McCain’s leave no man behind attitude. I have no doubt that his pull with the terrorist group and with Colombia’s lobbyists made this rescue possible regardless of what the Colombians say.

  1. [...] After the initial incident, one blogger even speculated that the Betancourt rescue could swing the US Presidential election. (see link here) Another blog spoofed the whole incident as if McCain had really conducted the rescue. (see link) [...]

  2. What’s more his vote on FISA yesterday was astoundingly brave. And you know he’s going to hit Obama all fall for flip-flopping on FISA.
